About

Our Mission

The Judson Lyons Society (JLS) draws its inspiration from the extraordinary legacy of Judson Whitlocke Lyons (1860–1924) — a legal pioneer who overcame the profound adversity of being born into slavery to become the first African-American admitted to the Georgia Bar. A self-taught scholar who pursued education at Augusta Theological Institute (now Morehouse College) and Howard University Law School, Lyons’ life exemplified perseverance, intellectual excellence, and service to the African-American community.
Throughout his distinguished career, Lyons not only practiced law successfully but also played pivotal roles in civil rights, politics, and education. As an ally of W.E.B. DuBois and Booker T. Washington, and a leader in the Georgia Equal Rights Association, Lyons championed equality and opportunity for African-Americans during the critical post-Reconstruction Era. His appointment as Register of the United States Treasury by President William McKinley marked one of the highest federal offices held by an African-American at the time.
Beyond his public achievements, Lyons remained deeply committed to empowering future generations through education and community leadership. His legacy lives on through the Judson Lyons Society, founded by Morehouse alumni in 2015, which continues to nurture and support aspiring Morehouse lawyers. Guided by Lyons’ example, JLS is dedicated to cultivating courageous leadership, promoting excellence in the legal profession, and advancing the cause of justice for the African-American community and beyond.

Our Vision

To produce leaders in law and justice who are empowered by the enduring legacy of Africa’s legal traditions, inspired by the achievements of trailblazers like Judson Whitlocke Lyons—the first Morehouse graduate to become an attorney—and committed to equity, truth, and community upliftment.

Our Philosophical Foundation

Understanding Our History: A Commitment to Cultural Legacy

We believe that to move forward, we must first look back. Drawing from the wisdom of African scholars such as Dr. Cheikh Anta Diop and Dr. John Henrik Clarke, we affirm that understanding our history is essential for shaping our future. Our programming integrates this philosophy with the African principle of Sankofa—“go back and fetch it”—underscoring our duty to learn from the past to lead in the present.

Our Ancestral Foundation.

From the creation of the world’s first university at Ipet Isut (Karnak) to the advanced legal customs of ancient African societies, our ancestors laid the foundation for today’s systems of justice. These traditions exemplify that our people are not newcomers to the law, but rather its originators.

Legal Traditions of Africa

We recognize and teach the African roots of modern law through the study of:

The “Weighing of the Heart” Ceremony

the spiritual and judicial rite rooted in the principles of Ma’at: truth, justice, and mora

The “Opening of the Mouth” Ceremony

symbolizing the power of speech, justice, and wisdom as seen in the role of Tehuti (Thoth), the god of law and truth.
These traditions exemplify that our people are not newcomers to the law, but rather its originators.

Why We Exist

The Judson Lyons Society exists to empower Morehouse Men to pursue legal careers with confidence, cultural pride, and a commitment to justice. By beginning our story with Africa’s legal legacy and continuing it through our initiatives today, we ensure that our members walk into every courtroom, classroom, and community equipped with not just knowledge—but identity, purpose, and pride.
